Founded in 1924, the Department of English is one of the oldest departments in the university. The English Language and Literature Program is one of the top programs at Sun Yat-sen University and in Guangdong Province, and is a key discipline at both provincial and national levels. It is also home to a pioneering program in creative writing. The Department of English aims to instill in its students high-level language proficiency in addition to strong multicultural awareness, creativity and independence in the work place.

Currently, more than 50% of the undergraduate students have opportunities to study abroad either as exchange students or fee-paying students at the University of Manchester, the University of Birmingham, and the University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom; Miami University and Illinois Wesleyan University in the United States; the University of Southern Denmark; University of Cologne in Germany, and the City University of Hong Kong.
