FLS Student won the first Prize in the Pearl River Delta Inter-university French Speech Competition

On March 25, 2017, the Pearl River Delta Inter-university French Speech Competition was held on Zhuhai Campus of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) to celebrate the 22nd French Festival (Fête de la Francophonie) in South China. Consul General of France in Guangzhou attended the final, during which contestants from universities in the Pearl River Delta region competed vigorously. Xu Jiawei, a student from the School of Foreign Languages, took part in the competition. With the guide from the foreign teacher Frédérique Aron from the Department of French, Xu Jiawei stood out during the final competition and won the first prize.

With the theme “Build a More Environmentally Friendly Future in Pearl River Delta” of this speech competition, the contestants investigated and prepared carefully to elaborate their views. In Xu’s speech, she explained problems like heavy metal pollution, excessive capturing and slaughtering of wild animals, degradation and destruction of mangroves and stress for per-capita living space in Pearl River Delta region, in which she also put forward insightful views and called for attention to environmental issues. By virtue of fluent oral expression, good psychological quality and excellent stage performance, she received unanimous praise from the judges and audience.

Co-organized by 20 embassies or diplomatic offices in China, the 22nd French Festival was a great event for French learners. The speech competition was one of the festival’s sub-activities, involving French learners from Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Jiangmen, Huizhou, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Hong Kong and Macau. After the preliminary selection by colleges and universities, ten contestants reached the final speech competition, including SYSU students from the School of Foreign Languages, Sino-French Institute of Nuclear Engineering and Technology and School of Tourism Management. The competition showed the mien of French learners in colleges and universities, deepened young students’ understanding on French culture, and contributed to the cultural communication between China and France.
