Dr. Cheng ZHAN is currently professor and PhD supervisor of School of Foreign Languages, Sun Yat-sen University. Prior to this, he was vice dean (academic and international) and professor at School of Interpreting and Translation Studies, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies.
He graduated from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies with a B.A and obtained his M.A from the University of Warwick, and a PhD in Translation Studies from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. He was also a visiting fellow at Oxford University, California State University at Los Angeles, Hong Kong Baptist University and Fujen Catholic University of Taiwan.
Dr. Zhan is South China’s only member of the International Association of Conference Interpreters, or AIIC, the global association of top conference interpreters worldwide, a certified conference interpreter of the People’s Republic of China, secretary-general of the Interpretation Committee of the Translators Association of China (TAC), as well as an expert of the United Nations Training Programme for Language Professionals.
Back in 2008, he was appointed official interpreter of the Beijing Olympic Village, and interpreted for over 40 heads of states in their meetings with Chinese officials. He was winner of the Award for Outstanding Contribution to China’s Translation Undertaking after completing his work for the Beijing Olympic Games.
In 2012, Dr. Zhan was voted “Top Ten Outstanding Young People in Guangzhou.
His many other awards include “Guangdong Provincial Outstanding Teacher Award” and “The 14th Fok Ying Tung Education Foundation Award for Excellent Young Teachers of Higher Learning Institutions”. He is a key member of the national level teaching team of “English Interpreting”. With research interest in interpreting theories, interpreter training and translation studies, he has published 4 monographs, 10 national level textbooks, and about 40 peer-reviewed papers.
