A Reading by Students and Teachers both at Home and Abroad
Last updated:2017-12-05
On November 22, 2017, the Sun Yat-sen University Center for English-language Creative Writing presented its 26th Book Club Event, a reading by teachers and students from both Sun Yat-sen University and RMIT University, Australia.Tonight’s reading is the first of its kind as it is a joint show of both the teachers and students. Professor Dai Fan, director of the Sun Yat-sen University Center for English-language Creative Writing, and foreign instructor Jonathan Morley who was the master of ceremony for the reading, also read with the students.

The reading started with a group of three students from RMIT, followed by three students from SYSU, thus alternating between the Chinese and Australian. Presented were a mixture of poetry, excerpts of short stories, diaries, prefaces of novels, and non-fiction essays.

As John Morley said, reading is a way to practice students’ stage craft, in that students need to “perform” what has been written, which writing itself doesn’t involve.
The RMIT students had spent two whole days with the students from the School of Foreign Languages, SYSU, on literary exchanges, i.e. sharing with each other’s favorite books, what to write and how to write, and teaching collaboration in an anthology project.
These activities all contributed to the promotion of reading and writing world literature.
