Opening ceremony and orientation for undergraduate students of FLS held on Zhuhai Campus

On August 18, 2013, the Opening Ceremony and Orientation for Undergraduate Students of the School of Foreign Languages (FLS) was held on Zhuhai Campus. 147 new students attended the ceremony, presided over by Cao Xin, Deputy Secretary of FLS. The ceremony was joined by approximately 30 members of FLS faculty, including Professor Chang Chenguang, Dean of FLS; Dr. Xu Dongli, Secretary of FLS; Dr. Liao Haiqing and Dr. Xu Aihong, Vice Deans of FLS, Professor Huang Guowen, Chang Jiang Scholar; department heads as well as other teachers. Mr. Kuniyuki Nakahara, Chief Consul of the Consulate General of Japan in Guangzhou, was invited to attend the event.

Dr. Xu Dongli greeted all new students with cordial welcome, and introduced the history and features of FLS. She conveyed her expectation for the freshmen — to be courteous, honest, responsible, diligent, progressive, optimistic, well-prepared and excellent.

On behalf of FLS faculty, Dr Wu Xiaoyan delivered a speech to share her experience of working in Mexico and learning Spanish, and encouraged the newcomers to keep learning, be modest, and be brave in asking questions. “Follow your heart, but don't mess up your mind!”

Xu Huiyuan, representative of senior students, gave a talk on “why do we go to university” to address the importance of time management in university. "Never stop learning, never stop exploring, because the world belongs to those who keep up with it," he said. Wu Luyao, representative of the freshmen, expressed her joy of being a new SYSUer, as well as her determination to fulfill responsibility and make the best of her college life.

Before the ceremony, Professor Chang Chenguang delivered a lecture on learning methods and philosophy, as the first lesson for new FLS students. After the ceremony, four departments held meetings with the students respectively.


Meanwhile, the FLS Student Affairs Office arranged intense orientation for the freshmen, including lectures on safety education, introduction to scholarships, student loans, university regulations etc. Dean Chang Chenguang, Secretary Xu Dongli, Deputy Secretary Cao Xin and Counselor Hua Yi also paid a visit to the students’ dormitories.


"We will study extensively, enquire accurately, reflect carefully, discriminate clearly, practice earnestly, and become the pillars of our nation." The freshmen will start their journey here, in FLS, with new energy and hope.
