In Remembrance of Professor Ruqaiya Hasan

Emeritus Professor Ruqaiya Hasan, one of the leading figures in the Systemic Functional Linguistics community, passed away in Sydney on the afternoon of 24 June 2015.

As a world renowned linguist, Professor Hasan has taught and held visiting positions at various universities in England, America and Australia. Her last appointment was at Macquarie University, Australia, from where she retired as Emeritus Professor in 1994. Throughout her career she researched and published widely in the areas of stylistics, culture, context and text, lexicogrammar and semantic variation. She was a great friend to many of us here at the School of Foreign Languages, Sun Yat-sen University, where she served as consultant to the Functional Linguistics Institute and the M.A.K. Halliday Library. The last time she gave a keynote speech in China was July 2013, at the ISFC-40 at Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou.
