Abstract: Each of the three categories of narrative (tense, aspect, and mood) comprises the thematic dimension and the mimetic dimension. The two dimensions interact with and build on each other so that an intended effect will be produced. A fiction translator needs to make good sense of the interaction and intention in order to transfer the textual properties as much as possible. On the basis of in-depth analyses of narrative and rhetoric in Lu Xun’s stories and their English versions, I will discuss ways of transferring and constructing the textual properties at the two dimensions in the tense and aspect categories.
