Abstract: During the colonial occupation of Taiwan from 1895 to 1945, Japan depended completely on translation and interpretation as a means to both maintain their presence and exercise rule over the island. While a multitude of interpreters acted as conduits for communication between the colonizer and the colonized, there remains a dearth of information regarding a wide range of details relating to the lives of these individuals, including their training regimen, translation activities, individual perspectives and important influences. This hole in the documentary record limits our ability to better understand these key witnesses to a moment in history.
