The Sun Yat-sen University Center for English-language Creative Writing present

Topic: Writing from the Edge of the Known World
Speaker: Veronique Greenwood

Did you know that we have scent receptors on our kidneys? Or that spores released from rain forests help form clouds? Or that some women may be able to see many more colors than the rest of us? Have you thought about what it means to be conscious, and did you know that one of the most important cell lines in biology was taken from a woman who died in 1931, without her permission? For science writers, these curiosities and profundities are their daily bread, and Veronique Greenwood will provide an introduction to the genre.

Veronique Greenwood's articles and essays about science have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Time, Popular Science, New Scientist, and many others. She is a former staff writer for Discover magazine and has a degree in cell biology from Yale.
