The 10th Book Club of The SYSU Center for English-language Creative Writing, 18 Dec.
Last updated:2015-12-17
The Sun Yat-sen University Center for English Creative Writing presents its 10th Book Club event“This poem is addressed to me: A Lecture on Reading Poetry” by Nazli Inal
This lecture will look at examples of modern American poetry in order to discuss reading poetry. We will read a selection of poems by E.E.Cummings, Jack Gilbert, Donald Justice, and Elizabeth Willis, which, while far from supplying an exhaustive list of representatives, will give us ample opportunity to talk about why we read poetry, how do we read it, how do language and art work together, what do figures of speech such as metaphor and metonymy do to our brains, and simply to take pleasure in the written word.
Nazlı İnal is a graduate of Robert College of Istanbul, and Gettysburg College where she majored in English with a concentration in Creative Writing. In Aix-en-Provence, France, she studied art history at the Institut Americain Universitaire, and oil painting at Atelier Marchutz. She received her MFA in Nonfiction from the University of Iowa Nonfiction Writing Program.
