Abstract: The early twentieth century witnessed the thriving of Chinese newspapers in the British colony Hong Kong and the boom of Chinese translations of foreign literature. While the translations in newspapers, especially those in Shanghai and Beijing, have gained increasing attention, the translations in Hong Kong Chinese newspapers around the turn of the twentieth century have largely gone unregarded. This paper aims to delineate the trajectories of these translations with reference to four newspapers in circulation in Hong Kong, namely China(中國日報), Everything Matters(唯一趣報有所謂), Eastern News(東方報), and the Chinese Mail(華字日報). With a brief coverage of the interwoven relationship between Chinese newspapers and the social development, the talk will focus on four translations, each from one of the above newspapers, to discuss issues like redefining the earliest Chinese renditions, rewriting of the images of women, the relay translation via Japanese, and linguistic issues in Hong Kong and Shanghai, etc.
