Introduction

The School of Foreign Languages (FLS) enjoys a long history as one of the oldest schools of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). Its predecessor, the Department of English Literature, was established in 1924. The French Major and the German Major were set up in 1957 and 1958 respectively, and in 1978, the Japanese Major was established. In 1992, FLS was officially founded based on the former Department of Foreign Languages, Guangzhou English Language Center (GELC) and the Center of Chinese Training of Sun Yat-sen University.

FLS cherishes a long and rigorous academic tradition and has a host of famous scholars as members of teaching faculty in history, including Hong Shen, Liang Shiqiu, Dai Liuling, Liang Zongdai, Wang Zongyan, Xie Wentong, Yu Dachun, and Gui Shichun. Since its establishment, FLS has earned a high reputation among fellow schools for its academic achievements on foreign languages and literature studies as well as the distinct characteristics of small-class teaching and international connections.

FLS comprises four academic departments, namely the Department of English, the Department of French, the Department of German and the Department of Japanese. FLS offers two PhD programs: English Language and Literature, and Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, as well as five MA programs: English Language and Literature, French Language and Literature, German Language and Literature, Japanese Language and Literature, and Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. FLS also offers opportunities for postdoctoral research.

The faculty of FLS is composed of approximately 56 teachers, including fifteen full professors and seventeen associate professors. Our faculty is increasingly international, with foreign lecturers and distinguished scholars regularly introduced into different departments.

FLS has established extensive links and exchanges with many overseas institutions, featuring joint research and student exchange programs. Distinguished scholars are regularly invited to visit and conduct academic exchanges, including Professor M.A.K. Halliday, the distinguished linguist and founder of systemic functional linguistics, and Professor Ruquiya Hasan, also a famous international linguist, and many others.

FLS positions itself as a research-oriented humanities school and is dedicated to academic research and teaching.
